This listing is based on the knowledge that ONE form of PRA that affects our Australian Cattle Dogs is via an Autosomal Recessive gene (prcd). This means that both parents of an affected dog must be (at the very least) carriers of the prcd gene. One or both parents of an affected dog may be affected themselves (but have not yet been diagnosed and/or have not yet submitted to this listing). Keep in mind also that any offspring of an affected dog or bitch are (at the very least) carriers of the prcd gene. Offspring listed as carriers could themselves be affected (but have not yet been diagnosed and/or have not yet submitted to this listing).
It is known that our dogs are indeed affected by "something else"...either another form of PRA or a "PRA-like" disorder. The genetic transmission of this anomaly is as of yet UNKNOWN. While that may be a weakness in this database (as carriers may be incorrectly extrapolated from affected offspring or parents), it's better to be overly cautious in this case. This listing is a tool, not a "blacklist".

Submitting a dog to this listing should in NO WAY to be reason to be ashamed. Quite the opposite is true, those who are speaking up and talking about PRA are those that care enough about our breed to move FORWARD and EDUCATE instead of sticking our heads in the sand.

The absence of certain "lines" from this list merely means that those dogs have either not yet (or ever) been tested, were not tested late enough in life, or just not submitted yet for disclosure via this listing. We all came from the same place genetically speaking. Hopefully people will see this sharing of information as a tool to use in breeding wisely until we get a valid genetic test for this (these) disorder(s).

Canine Eye Registration Foundation
If you have a dog on the list above and have a hard copy of their eye exam results that was not sent into CERF (ie, results of a CERF exam not submitted or a foreign eye exam sheet). I will happily list the results if you do the following:
- If you do not have access to a scanner, send me a clean copy of the exam report and I will scan it in for you. (Include a SASE if you would like it returned). PLease don't send me your originals!
- If you have a scanner, scan in the report as a BLACK AND WHITE image file and save it as a .gif or .jpg. Be sure to set your scanner to no more than 72 dpi and do not use color settings. Email the image file to me at pedigree@cattledog.com
