MEET POOCH:
Pooch, female Red Heeler, about 7 yrs old, spayed, refused to leave when her owner was taken to assisted living. I fed her for 10 days before she would let me bring her to my home. Her owner had rescued her about 3 years ago when she was found in the woods with a litter of pups. Pooch was very happy protecting her owner, housebroken, will NOT get on furniture. She has a strong sense of how a dog should behave. She is good with cats, but needs to be the main dog. Pooch would mother a young dog and accept it. She doesn't ask for much attention, but is jealous of attention given to my other dogs.
This little girl tested positive for heartworms, has completed treatment, and her blood test is now clear of any microfilaria. She is on heartworm preventative and is up to date on shots. I think she had only recently been infected with the heartworms, as she had an easier time with treatment than other rescued dogs have had.
Pooch is very wary of strangers, and sounds the alarm before my dogs notice anything. She's a great watchdog, but only barks if a strange dog or person is near. Her fur is soft like rabbit fur, is short but thick. She would be best with a female, but a man could win her trust with patience. She's wary of children, and since she hasn't been around them, I don't know how she would be. She has mothered a foster puppy, staying by her crate and playing with her all day. She's definitely serious about her job, and her job is taking care of her owner. She might be wonderful with a child if she decided that was her job. I have an Aussie mix with the same traits, and they have tangled over who gets to protect me. I need a home for Pooch, but it has to be the right home.
